The purpose of the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) sensor in your vehicle is to warn you that at least one or more tires are are under-inflated.
Indirect tire pressure monitoring systems don't rely on sensors to do the work, or at least not pressure sensors. The systems rely on wheel speed sensor data to interpret the size of a tire based on how fast it rotates -- a small tire would rotate faster than a larger tire, and an underinflated tire is smaller than one with proper inflation.

Indirect TPMS do not use physical pressure sensors but measure air pressures using software-based systems, which by evaluating and combining existing sensor signals like wheel speeds, accelerometers, driveline data, etc. estimate and monitor the tire pressure without physical pressure sensors in the wheels.
Most tire shops and repair shops recommend servicing the TPMS after changing or installing new tires or wheels by replacing the valve core, retaining nut, seal and cap on the valve stem, then testing the system to make sure it's operating correctly. TPMS come in two types: direct and indirect. All TPMS sensors, tools and everything that transmits a signal has to be approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The FCC makes sure our airwaves do not clash by regulating the frequency and strength of signals. Ford TPMS Sensor Training Tool (Motorcraft TPMS19 Transmitter).
Pre-Programmed TPMS sensor with black stem. These TPMS sensors will fit any vehicle with TPMS sensors equipped from factory. Please enter your make,
However, it's starting to seem like it might be cheaper to have the tire shop pull the old tires off and switch the sensors to my new wheels (instead of buying new ones), and just sell the wheels and tires separately. This TPMS sensor uses a lithium battery with a five- to 10-year life span.

Direct TPMS systems use TPMS sensors inside the wheel to accurately report pressure data to the vehicle’s ECU in real time. Direct systems include Asian, Domestic and European vehicles.

If the tire pressure in one or more tires is 25% or more below the manufacturers recommended level, then a low tire Ford Direct TPMS (tire pressure monitoring sensor) is a warning system that warns a vehicle's operator of an unsafe change in the air pressure in one or more of the tires. Ford TPMS readings are provided by pressure-sensing transmitters (TPMS) that are mounted inside each tire and sent to a central computer (ECU) for display on the dashboard.
The input from the wheel speed sensors at each wheel is analyzed by the computer.

Multi-protocol TPMS sensors are direct replacements for the original parts except that one sensor contains “many protocols.” As the name suggests, one sensor has been created to “house” multiple sensor output protocols, which means fewer part numbers cover a wide range of OE part numbers.

If you drive a newer car, you probably have what's called a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) installed. TPMS is an electronic system inside the tire that monitors air pressure.
The TMPS system is comprised of sensors or pressure traducers that convey crucial information like air pressure, battery state, temperature, and sensor location to the vehicle’s computer. When the TPMS system detects that your car tire (s) has become extremely low, it triggers a warning light on the dashboard.
However, it's starting to seem like it might be cheaper to have the tire shop pull the old tires off and switch the sensors to my new wheels (instead of buying new ones), and just sell the wheels and tires separately. This TPMS sensor uses a lithium battery with a five- to 10-year life span. But you still need to keep a decent tire gauge in your glovebox. It's hot. Real hot. Using a soap and water solution, carefully clean the sensor with a cloth.
